The ship stands tall, the sky looks down so soft.
A second Sun lights up the launching site
And slow, and straight, Columbia roars aloft
Past birds, past planes, past air, to space and night.

Around the Earth, six million miles she sailed
With seven lives, yes seven dreams and more.
They saw a world whose nations’ borders paled;
They saw a world unstained by crime of war.

Blue world, along in a sea of peace and time
For two weeks joined by a tiny, special moon
Looked out as one to far-off worlds sublime-
But time had come to head for home-so soon.

So far they flew, yet so much more is nigh;
So short their time, too soon for souls to fly.
